Fishergate Postern Tower, at the end of Piccadilly, is a 4 storey stone tower built around 1504 and has a quirky narrow spiral staircase linking the interesting rooms and with views of the roof structure. The FPT opening will be staffed by Friends of York Walls volunteers who will be on hand to help, and to tell you about the history of the tower. You can also learn about plans for the future of the tower and other 2017 planned activities.
Copies of the FoYW book “A Walking Guide to York’s City Walls” will be on sale. You can also “Sponsor a Stone” on either the West Wall or the North Wall to raise funds for the restoration of and repairs to the tower.
We need more volunteers and also people to join the Management Committee and Trustees. If you are interested please email us at friendsofyorkwalls@gmail.com
This years Annual Friends Meeting was held on 18th March 2017 at Clements Hall – 2pm. Guest Speaker Keith Emerick. All Friends and Supporters (past, present, and future) were invited. Parking available + tea/coffee & biscuits.
We were thrilled to have Dr Keith Emerick (English Heritage Inspector of Ancient Monuments in York and North Yorkshire, and Research Associate at the University of York) give a talk entitled “Heritage and Community Heritage Projects”. Keith gave an overview of the things people are talking about in the heritage sphere and then gave examples of what community heritage groups are actually doing.
We also had a few stands for akin voluntary organisations to showcase their work. Held in Clements Hall (Nunthorpe Road, York YO23 1BW) at 14:00 on Saturday 18th March!
We need more supporters, more volunteers, more committee members & trustees. Do come along to any events or open days, bring your friends, and see what we do and what we plan to do – and consider helping us to achieve our aims and objectives.
