Fishergate Postern Tower
for Friends of York Walls
You are on the city-side of an early Tudor tower in York’s city walls.
To the left is the ‘postern’ [= small gateway through the walls] it guarded.
To the right buildings are modern because that side of the tower once overlooked a wide river.
From here go up onto the city wall or round the outside of the tower or into the tower.
You are where a dam once stood, it flooded land to your left.
The plinth at the bottom of the tower disappears to the left because the ground fell away here down to the river.
The tower and the city walls show battlements and one slit window.
From here you can go on round the tower.
You are where the wide river was, the ground here has been raised and flattened since the tower was built.
Above and to the right of the lowest window, part of the Tudor toilet sticks out from the tower so that the waste from it could drop straight into the river.
From here go round the tower to the right or back to the entrance.
You are so close to the window you can see a mason’s mark on its left and the oak beam laid on top of the battlements when the present roof was put on.
Behind you, in the staircase, stairs climb up to what was a look-out turret before this roof was put on – can you see booted legs coming down?
You are on steep, narrow stone stairs.
They go up beyond the top floor to what was
a look-out turret before the roof was added –
find out more from the window on the top floor.
From here you can go to the second floor or
top floor or another part of the stairs.
You are on the ground floor where the walls are more than a metre thick. Inside and out they are faced with large smooth blocks of magnesian limestone.
These were shaped by masons around 1500, woodwork is modern. The narrow arch to the stairs is to the right of the outside door, a window is behind you.
From here go up the spiral stairs or back outside.
You are on the first floor.
The cupboard [to the left of the closed door to the stairs] shows that the walls are filled with unshaped stone behind the facing of smooth squared blocks. Behind you a narrow arch, to the left of the fireplace, leads to the Tudor toilet.
From here go to this toilet or up or down the spiral stairs.
You are outside the walled city.
On the right is the archway of the postern, the deep shadow at its top shows where a portcullis could slide down to close off this way into the city.
From here go on round the tower or back to the entrance.
You are on a high wall-walk behind battlements on the city walls.
The walls stop here because a river once stretched from the tower to York Castle.
You can see the castle walls between the trees to the left of the tower.
The dual-carriageway road crosses the river at the point where it was once dammed making it wider.
You are on the top floor looking towards the stone case
for the spiral stairs. Around you are windows which were
once open battlements, behind you is a drainage hole
which proves this. Then this roof was put on, this was more
than 400 years ago – using second-hand timbers!
From here go to the stairs or to the window opposite them.
You are in the middle of a steep, narrow, spiral staircase that links all the floors of the tower. If doors to the floors are closed it has one small, narrow window to give it natural light.
From here you can go to the first floor or second floor or another part of the staircase.
You are on steep, narrow stone stairs that turn to the right as they spiral upwards.
This gives a handicap to a right handed attacker from the ground floor [their right hand has little space] – but not all stairs twist this way.

You are on the second floor with 3 very different displays:
on the left, what archaeologists found in a dig here;
on the right, a 2,000 year time-line history of the city walls;
in the middle, a working model of the postern’s missing gates.
From here go up or down the spiral stairs.
Looking down in the smallest room of the tower. On the left is a shelf of Tudor-style toilet wipes. Opposite the shelf (possibly hidden by this writing!) is the Tudor toilet seat with a round hole above where the river was once. Look round for a little window and a short, kinked 'privacy passage' back to the main room.
